Summer vacation is the holiday season for students. Why is the um campus so busy? In the teaching building and the laboratory can see their concentrated and determined eyes, wearing lab clothes when doing experiments appear to have a systematic. Originally, these students went to attend a series of diverse summer camps at um, including local primary and secondary school students, as well as excellent masters and doctoral students from all over the world. The Australian reporter went into the LABS to see what the students were doing inside.

I am particularly curious about biology and hope to learn more about it through attending the “bio-medicine summer camp” sponsored by the school of health sciences. The teaching mode of middle schools is mostly teaching according to the content of books, and there are few opportunities to enter the laboratory. The summer camp of um provides many opportunities to do experiments, and the teachers will ask us to do them while teaching, which will be more impressive. In addition, the experiment designed by the summer camp is very meaningful, especially to extract their own DNA into a necklace. Every time I see this necklace in the future, I will think of today’s event and feel it is very meaningful and unforgettable.

Through the “outstanding mainland university students summer camp”, I came to um for a seven-day exchange, including special lectures, laboratory teaching, Macao history and culture experience, and visit to Macao technology enterprises. My first impression of um is that the campus scenery here is very good, and the positive learning atmosphere of students has also infected me. The experimental equipment here is very advanced, and a lot of relevant research has been done in the academic frontier. I have a solid academic foundation, and the teachers’ research has also achieved very good results. I will consider studying for a master’s degree in um in the future.

I attended the “summer camp of sustainable energy storage system”. The most impressive part was that my teacher showed us the principle of battery conduction with citrus in the theory class. I was surprised that citrus could be used as a conductive medium, which further stimulated my interest in chemical experiments. On the last day of the summer camp, all the students divided into groups and used what they learned in class to make a movable battery, and then tested and competed on the battery’s endurance. In my opinion, it was an unforgettable experience to enter the chemistry laboratory in the university in high school, which broadened my horizon and made me look forward to going to the university to do research in the future.

I am a member of the popular science group in the middle school, and I have participated in some international robot competitions and got good results before. Therefore, my school tutor recommended me to participate in the “intelligent transportation summer camp”. Although I have some experience in robot programming, it is difficult to design intelligent car models. In terms of programming, it is completely different to put one sensor code and two sensors in the model car. In the whole process of production, I can combine my past experience and apply the newly learned knowledge. This summer camp enriched my understanding of robotics, and I believe it will be of great help to my future research and competition.

I am particularly interested in the topic of climate change and want to major in meteorology in the future, so I participated in the summer camp of climate change and civil engineering. Nature is unpredictable, so I want to explore more, and climate change is closely related to us, constantly affecting our lives, we should learn more about it. This summer camp is beyond my expectation. In addition to absorbing a lot of meteorological information, I also learned some knowledge of urban construction. One day, we used Lego in groups to try to “build” a building without considering the risk factors. Then the teacher would comment on what might be wrong with such a structure one by one.

The civil engineering summer camp, now in its 10th year in a row, was the first to include the theme of climate change, attracting more students to sign up. In addition to the lecturers from the department, the President of the Macao meteorological society was invited to give a lecture on popular science and share some knowledge about astronomy and meteorology. In keeping with the themes of engineering and climate change, I also talked about urban planning, climate change and our relationship. In addition to attending classes, there is also a daily workshop where students can make a small tool to measure air pollution and build buildings with Lego.
The summer camp is one of the projects of “Macao science and technology practice base for primary and secondary school students”. With this base, our activities can be carried out at any time, not only during the summer vacation. We are planning to extend our experience in summer science popularization to the regular teaching of local primary and secondary schools. We hope to introduce the issues of Macao and the world through the platform of um.

In terms of curriculum design, we consider the needs of urban development, and cooperate with the Macao SAR government to implement the concept of “smart city”, with intelligent transportation, renewable energy, big data as the theme, teaching in life.
Macao middle schools generally have independent science popularization groups with a single research direction. After the establishment of “Macao science and technology practice base for primary and secondary school students”, it can be developed from two aspects. On the one hand, it can continue to hold different courses or summer camps to provide more professional and academic learning and practice opportunities for primary and secondary school students. On the other hand, courses and lectures aimed at middle school teachers are offered to improve the diversity of teaching and the quality of popular science. In recent years, the topic of youth entrepreneurship has become a current issue in news. Professor huang said that in the future, he will also hold workshops on youth entrepreneurship and promote interdisciplinary and cross-field cooperation, so that students will not only have skills in scientific and technological innovation, but also have knowledge of entrepreneurship and business management.
Science, Technology and Humanities Summer Camps inspire potential
In 2018, um established the “Macao science and technology practice base for primary and secondary school students” and “Macao humanities and social science education base for primary and secondary school students” to jointly cultivate diverse talents and promote the development of local science popularization education and humanities and social science education.
The two bases have been committed to holding various summer camps to enable students to experience the fun of learning and inspire their potential. Summer camp including science subject by sustainable energy storage system of science and technology development fund institute, intelligent transportation, robotics and artificial intelligence, four axis aircraft three-dimensional reconstruction, deep learning and computer vision, climate change and soil carpenter and potential expansion plans such as scientific experiments, lets the student from the application layer on the surface to deepen the knowledge of engineering and science. At the same time, the school of science and technology, the school of health sciences and the institute of applied physics and materials engineering have opened “summer camps for outstanding mainland university students” to provide practical and exchange opportunities for students who want to devote themselves to scientific research and doctoral studies. In addition, the “STEAM summer camp for primary school students” was launched for the first time this year, which was specially designed for primary 5 and 6 students in Australia. Through experiencing various advanced machines and intelligent devices, students can be stimulated to explore their curiosity about popular science knowledge. The school of humanities continues to offer language courses such as the Portuguese summer course and the English immersion summer camp, which attract many students from different cultural backgrounds both locally and internationally.
With so many wonderful activities, it is no wonder that the um campus is so lively this summer!
