2019 Macao Youth Innovation Challenge

I. Introduction
To enhance students’ talents in STEM innovation and creativity, FDCT and the University of Macau organize the competition of 2019 Macao Youth Innovation Challenge. There are two entries for application i.e. High SchoolOpen Section and Talent ProgramElite Section. Students who are not in FDCT Talent Program should apply for High SchoolOpen Sectionwhile current FDCT Talent Program students are eligible to apply for Talent ProgramElite Section.

The first part of the challenge is to reform the selection mechanism, performance outstanding high school students will join by science and technology fund and teach youth collaboration “youth science and technology to develop plan”, the university give special guidance and training, after the plan of middle school students will pass the second round of selection, choose a good project to participate in high level science competition at home and abroad. In summary, it will be a “select-train-re-select” process.

The challenge will be organized by the science and engineering popularization center of the university of macau. The competition is divided into two parts: High School Open Section and Talent Program Elite Section. The target of High School Open Section are from junior middle school students to senior high school students. The target of Talent Program Elite Section is the students who are studying in the potential expansion program.

II. Classification

1. Engineering– Including but not limited to environmental science and engineering, computer science, engineering and energy science, etc.

2. Science– Including but not limited to mathematics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, zoology, botany and biomedicine, etc.

III. Eligibility and Materials Submission

1. Current Macao secondary students who are in Form 2 to Form 5 in the academic year 2019/2020 are eligible to apply for the High School Open Section; for the Talent Program Elite Section, it is only open to current FDCT Talent Program students.

2. Open for individuals or groups not more than 3 students (same school).

3. Each student can only submit application once.

4. All projects must be original.

5. Submission

5.1    High School Open Sectionshall submit the following materials:

  • Application form (paper and electronic versions of word files should be submitted)
  • Abstract in Chinese or English or Portuguese (in one A4 page)
  • Poster (A2 size in PDF format within 2MB)
  • Video not more than 3 minutes.
  • The above materials must be submitted in electronic format (on CD-ROM, DVD or USB)

5.2    Talent Program Elite Sectionshall submit the following materials:

  • Application form (paper and electronic versions of word files should be submitted)
  • Abstract in Chinese or English or Portuguese (in one A4 page)
  • Research report (in 4 pages of A4 paper)
  • Poster (A2 size in PDF format within 2MB)
  • Video not more than 5 minutes.
  • The above materials must be submitted in electronic format (on CD-ROM, DVD or USB)

6. The attachment is named as Abstract_XXX, Report_XXX, Poster_XXX (XXX is the project title) and the submitted CD should be marked with school name, student name and entry name. Please submit to the following address on or before September 27:

    Opening hours: Monday to Friday 15:30-22:00, Saturday 14:00-22:00, Sunday and public holidays 10:00-22:00 (closed on designated public holidays)

7. There are preliminary and final contests. Shortlisted applicants will be announced in early October for the final round, which will be held during the 2019 Macau Science and Technology Week in mid-October. (The final round is tentatively scheduled on 12 October 2019 at Hall D, Cotai Expo,The Venetian Macao)

IV. Selection Criteria and Awards

1. The selection committee will review the materials. Students could modify and submit supplementary materials in a specified period, if necessary. Only complete projects will be qualified for the preliminary evaluation.

2. Selection Criteria

  • Self-selected topic: topic must be proposed, selected or discovered by the students
  • Self-design and research: design must be conceived and produced by the students
  • Report and production should be completed by students own effort (if any)
  • Innovation: refer to the ways for improvement, analysis and use of data, new design of equipment or tools usage, study and solve technology problem in various aspects
  • Scientific nature: refer to the scientific and technological significance of project. It should be rational, accurate and reliable to scientific theories
  • Practicability: refer to the potential benefits in society and economy

3. The first, second and third prizes will be selected by the selection committee and the results will be announced during the Macau Science and Technology Week 2019.
